Recent Reports on the Discipline

This fall, NCA published two new reports about the Communication discipline.

The 2017-2018 Academic Job Listings in Communication Report is an annual analysis of college and university searches to fill academic positions in Communication, using data from job postings in the online NCA Career Center, the CRTNET listserv, and Spectra magazine. Specialists in strategic communication/public relations/advertising were the most sought after, accounting for 13 percent of the total number of postings in 2017-2018. Read the full report here.
   
A Profile of the Communication Doctorate V analyzes data from the National Science Foundation’s 2016 Survey of Earned Doctorates. Here are some highlights:

  • There were slightly more Communication doctorates awarded in 2016 than in 2015
  • Of the 673 doctorates conferred, 27 percent were in Communication Research, and 63 percent were in Communication Theory. 
  • The University of Texas conferred the most Communication doctorates (41), followed by the University of Southern California (21). 
  • Nearly 61 percent of 2016 doctoral recipients in Communication were female.
