The Legislative Assembly met during the 111th Annual Convention in Denver, Colorado, under the leadership of President Jeanetta Sims. The Assembly convened on Wednesday, November 19, and Saturday, November 22. Of the 155 Legislative Assembly members, 98 attended the Wednesday session and 99 attended the Saturday session.

Under Article III, Section 3 of the NCA Bylaws, the Legislative Assembly holds fiduciary responsibility for the affairs of the Association and oversees the Association’s strategic direction and policymaking. All business was conducted in accordance with Robert’s Rules of Order, and guided by NCA’s Strategic Plan and IDEA Strategic Plan.


Meeting Highlights

In addition to conducting regular business, the Assembly engaged in reflective conversations about the current state of the Association within the context of a Collective Year of L.I.F.T. (Leading with Imagination and Forward-Thinking), the guiding theme of President Sims’ term. Members also discussed areas where they and their respective groups felt confident and aligned in their work, as well as areas where additional knowledge, clarity, or support would strengthen their leadership. Separately, the Assembly considered which practices should be sustained, refined, or newly initiated to advance NCA’s long-term goals, identifying organizational needs, emerging priorities, and opportunities for continued growth.

The Assembly also completed several action items across the two sessions:

 

Approval of the 2026 Budget

Members approved the Association’s 2026 budget, ensuring continued progress toward strategic and operational priorities.

 

Leadership Development Committee Election

The Assembly elected two LA members to serve on the Leadership Development Committee.

 

Approval of the Leadership Committee Slate

The proposed slate of candidates for NCA leadership position was approved.

 

Reaffirmation of Existing Resolutions

The Assembly reaffirmed the following resolutions:

Extended Solitary Confinement and Torture
Credo for Net Neutrality, Free and Responsible Use of Electronic Networks, and the Digital Divide
Statement on the Protection and Defense of Academic Freedom and Freedom of Expression for Communication Scholars
A Code of Professional Ethics for the Communication Scholar/Teacher
Role of Communication Courses and Communication Faculty in General Education

 

Approval of Affiliate: Pi Kappa Delta

The Assembly approved Pi Kappa Delta as an affiliate of the Association.

 

Through thoughtful deliberation and decision-making, the Legislative Assembly fulfilled its role in shaping the direction and stewardship of the Association. NCA extends its appreciation to all members who participated in the Legislative Assembly during the 111th Annual Convention.
