Call for NCA Journal Editors and Submissions

The National Communication Association is seeking applications for the editorships of Communication and Cultural/Critical Studies, Journal of International and Intercultural Communication, and Text and Performance Quarterly, published by NCA and Taylor & Francis. Applications are due Jan. 31, 2026. The Publications Council’s nominees will be voted on by the Executive Committee and, if approved, will be voted on by the Legislative Assembly in Spring 2026. New Editors-Elect will begin working with manuscripts in 2027 and serve as Editor during 2028-2030. Editors receive a semi-annual stipend and may choose to have an associate editor or other editorial assistance.

NCA’s Journal of Communication and Race and the Journal of Applied Communication Research currently have minimal backlogs. This means shorter review times and quicker publication for accepted articles. Learn more about these journals and the submission process for all of NCA’s journals on NCA’s website.

Timely Topic: NCA Resource on Addressing Authoritarianism and Fascism

Check out NCA’s new online resource, “Addressing Authoritarianism: A Resource Library,” an active scholarship repository addressing the global rise of authoritarianism and fascism.

This archive, created as a grass-roots volunteer project led by Marina Levina, PhD., Editor of NCA’s Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies and chair of the Critical and Cultural Studies Division, will be a living document evolving over time through contributions from others in NCA and beyond.

“Addressing Authoritarianism” provides resources to enable successful pedagogical, research, creative, and administrative interventions into authoritarianism and fascism. Available to all, this public resource features theoretical, historical, and pedagogical resources on authoritarianism and fascism for scholars and educators to use in their teaching and writing.

The library contains theoretical and historical texts in communication and beyond, as well as college-level and K-12 lesson plans, and extensive media databases aimed at promoting critical interventions into authoritarianism and fascism. The library addresses authoritarianism and fascism as a global phenomenon with an emphasis on different regions worldwide. Taylor & Francis has now provided open access to 18 journal articles on this topic listed in the resource library.

ASSOCIATION NEWS

ACLS Statement Against White House “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education”

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) is a nonprofit federation of 81 scholarly organizations including NCA. On Oct. 1, the White House proposed to nine leading American universities that they agree to a list of demands in exchange for receiving preferential access to research funding. The “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education” undermines the long-standing independence of American academia. It works against the best interests of colleges and universities and of every one of us who has benefited from the knowledge they produce.

ACLS calls for the immediate rejection by all institutions of higher education, noting that, “Universities and colleges have one mission: to advance knowledge. Faculty carry out the mission by conducting research and teaching students. The knowledge they produce and circulate is independently assessed by professional peers. Interfering with that process by forcing knowledge to pass through a political filter is a tactic adopted by the Soviet Union and other authoritarian states. The White House is dressing up its compact as a reasonable corrective to what it views as problems in campus culture. Let no one be deceived. This proposal imposes government censorship on academia. It is anti-American, and it weakens our democracy by devaluing academic expertise”

New At-Home Advocacy Toolkit

NCA is a member and serves on the board of the Consortium of Social Science Associations (COSSA), a nonprofit organization with a mission to promote sustainable federal funding for and widespread use of social and behavioral science research. During these turbulent times, it is more important than ever that elected officials hear from their constituents. Members of the Congress were elected to represent the interests of you and your community; unfortunately, too few Americans utilize their right to engage with policymakers on the issues and concerns confronting their communities. There are lots of actions you can take to affect federal policy without needing to travel to the nation’s capital.

We are excited to share with you COSSA’s newest resource, their At-Home Advocacy Guide

This resource contains information on how you can impact federal policy from anywhere by calling and emailing your Members of Congress, attending a Town Hall meeting in your community, or responding to action alerts, among other activities.

Whether you are new to advocacy and looking to dip your toe in the policy process, or you’re already active and want new ideas, this guide is for you! We invite you to read it and share with others who want to engage in advocacy but may not know where to start.
