June 13-15, 2019, College Park, MD

The NCA Chairs’ Summer Institute provides an opportunity for department chairs to participate in intensive dialogue regarding the various challenges they face in leading their departments, and to share successful approaches. The 2019 Chairs’ Summer Institute, “Chairperson Leadership: Advocating, Mentoring, and Managing,” will be held June 13-15 in College Park, MD, and is designed to help department chairs better understand and address a variety of issues within their departments and larger university communities. Seminars will focus on the role of administrator, negotiating identity as a chair and administrator, and balancing research, teaching, and administrative responsibilities; managing issues of faculty mentoring and advocating for the department and faculty; identifying a departmental vision, goal-setting, generating faculty buy-in, and strategic planning; recruiting, hiring, and evaluating faculty; and managing departmental and campus crises. Seminar leaders will include John Caughlin (University of Illinois), Kent Ono (University of Utah), Thomas Endres (University of Northern Colorado), Helen Sterk (Western Kentucky University), and Maurice Hall (The College of New Jersey).

Attendance is limited to 30 participants, identified on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants should be current or incoming department chairs. Applications are due Monday, April 22, 2019.
