Congratulations to this Year’s Advancing the Discipline Grant Awardees

NCA is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2017 Advancing the Discipline grants. These grants support projects and events that are designed to advance Communication as an academic discipline.

A National-Level Assessment of Core Competencies in the Basic Communication Course 

Melissa Broeckelman-Post, George Mason University; Lindsey B. Anderson and Andrew D. Wolvin, University of Maryland; Angela M. Hosek, Ohio University; Cheri Simonds, Illinois State University; Karla Hunter, South Dakota State University; Kristina Ruiz-Mesa, California State University – Los Angeles; LeAnn Brazeal, Missouri State University.  

This grant will support a project aimed at understanding the degree to which NCA’s Core Competencies are achieved as learning outcomes in the basic course.

2017 National Communication Association Anti-Bullying Summit 

Keith Berry, University of South Florida, and Renee Cowan, Queens University of Charlotte 

This grant will support the “2017 National Communication Association (NCA) Anti-Bullying Summit,” a daylong event to be held November 14, 2017, that will cater to K-12 educators in the Dallas area.

Social Media Technology Conference and Workshop 

Jae Eun Chung, Howard University 

This grant will support an intensive, two-day event covering a wide range of issues that are related to social media, such as new scholarship, professional practices, and pedagogical approaches to teaching.

The Midwest Winter Workshop 

Matthew Houdek and Darrel Wanzer-Serrano, University of Iowa 

This grant will support a graduate student-organized, intra-disciplinary regional workshop for faculty and graduate students.

New Horizons in the Ethnography of Communication Conference
Michelle Scollo, College of Mount Saint Vincent, and Trudy Milburn, Purchase College 

This grant will support a conference that will bring together ethnography scholars, practitioners, and students to forge new horizons in Ethnography of Communication, Cultural Discourse Analysis, and Speech Codes Theory research, teaching, and practice.

Energy Democracy: Creating a Research Agenda 

Leah Sprain, University of Colorado Boulder, Tarla Peterson, University of Texas at El Paso, and Andrea Feldpausch-Parker, State University of New York  

This grant will support a symposium for exploring new research in energy democracy.

Salem DiscoTech 

Cindy Vincent, Salem State University 

This grant will support “Discovering Technology,” a multimedia workshop and fair.
