NCA Releases Two Reports on the Communication Discipline

December 5, 2019

This fall, NCA published two new reports about the Communication discipline.

The 2018-2019 Academic Job Listings in Communication Report is an annual analysis of college and university position advertisements to fill academic positions in Communication, using data from job postings in the online NCA Career Center, the CRTNET listserv, and Spectra magazine. The analysis found that specialists in strategic communication/public relations/advertising were the most sought after, accounting for more than 13 percent of the total number of postings in 2018-2019. A special November issue of Spectra, “The State of the Communication Discipline,” presented data on five aspects of the Communication discipline: Departments and Programs, Faculty in Communication, Undergraduate Students in Communication, Graduate Students in Communication, and Communication Scholarship. Among other data, the report notes that the number of Communication, Journalism, and Related Programs undergraduate and master’s degrees conferred continues to increase.  In 2017, there were more than 93,000 undergraduate degrees and over 10,000 master’s degrees conferred.  Read the full report here.
