Learning Outcomes in Communication Convening
On Saturday, October 1, 2016, NCA hosted a Learning Outcomes in Communication Convening on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. This one-day convening featured programs led by individuals from NCA’s LOC project and the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA). Faculty and doctoral students from across the nation participated in sessions focused on incorporating the LOCs into classrooms and General Education programs, creating new and adapting existing assignments and rubrics to align with the LOCs, and discussing ways to facilitate conversations about the LOCs with faculty, administration, community leaders, and potential employers of program graduates.
National Science Foundation Meeting
On October 14, 2016, NCA Assistant Director for Academic and Professional Affairs LaKesha Anderson attended the National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE) Meeting with Professional Organizations. Participants discussed communicating to Congress and the public, and improving outreach efforts for minority-serving institutions and students and scientists from underrepresented groups.
Lumina Foundation Meeting
On September 27-28, 2016, NCA Interim Executive Director Trevor Parry-Giles participated in a Lumina Foundation meeting, “Doctoral Education and Learning Outcomes Frameworks.” This invitation-only meeting facilitated a discussion on ways to prepare graduate students (future faculty) to understand and effectively use student learning outcomes, and explored the use, value, and challenges associated with disciplinary and transdisciplinary descriptions of competencies at the doctoral level. These issues were explored in the context of a larger learning framework that provides reference points for doctoral degree education.
