NCA Out & About
In May NCA delegate Kristine Muñoz and NCA Executive Director Nancy Kidd attended the American Council of Learned Societies’ (ACLS) Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, along with the delegates and Executive Directors from ACLS’ other 73 members. Also in attendance were more than 50 national humanities leaders from foundations, humanities centers, humanities councils, and presses.
As the Chair of the Executive Directors’ group and a member of the ACLS Board of Directors, Kidd opened the event with an introduction to the first evening of programming, which featured a discussion about aligning humanistic scholarship with public engagement. The next day featured presentations by current ACLS Fellows followed by a luncheon address by William Adams, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities. In the afternoon, a panel of distinguished scholars discussed “Literacies in the 21st Century.” The highlight of the day was the Charles Homer Haskins Prize Lecture, which was given by Wendy Doniger, Mircea Eliade Distinguished Service Professor of the History of Religions at the University of Chicago.
