NCA Hosts 103rd Annual Convention in Dallas

December 6, 2017

Last month, more than 4,000 Communication scholars convened in downtown Dallas for the NCA 103rd Annual Convention. This year’s program, designed by First Vice President Ronald Jackson II under the theme, “Our Legacy, Our Relevance,” explored how Communication research can be applied to our daily lives and to some of the world’s most pressing challenges, now and in the future.

The November 16 Opening Session featured spoken word poets and Communication scholars interacting about current issues such as race, gender, identity, and social justice. These themes continued the next night at a special evening event called Lyrical Justice, a poetry slam showcase featuring several national and global award-winning performers.

This year’s Carroll C. Arnold Distinguished Lecturer, Catherine R. Squires, presented a moving speech titled “Tubman & Jackson on the Twenty Dollar Bill; Or, Ghosts, Gossip, Mediums and Debts,” in which she consulted with ghosts and ghouls of the culture wars to imagine other ways of relating to traumatic histories.

On the final evening of the convention, before presenting this year’s NCA awards, President Stephen J. Hartnett addressed members on the topic of “Communication, Globalization, & the Prospects for Solidarity,” sharing successes from various NCA internationalization initiatives, and promoting new ideas. Hartnett asked NCA members to consider how Communication scholars can use their expertise to embody solidarity in the age of globalization.

The convention also featured a Graduate School Open House, Exhibit Hall, NCA Job Fair and PrepTalks, and more than 1,100 sessions and business meetings designed to allow attendees to share ideas, present new research, and network with colleagues across the discipline.
