NCA Hosts 101st Annual Convention in Las Vegas
More than 5,000 attendees were able to select from more than 1,200 sessions at NCA’s 101st Annual Convention. Themed “Embracing Opportunities” by First Vice President Christina S. Beck, the convention provided its own opportunities—to share pedagogical ideas and challenges, to present and learn about new research, and to network with colleagues from across the Communication discipline.
On Thursday, convention attendees had the opportunity to attend the NCA Opening Session, where a panel made up of Adam Earnheardt of Youngstown State University, Andre Johnson of the University of Memphis, Amy Kilgard of San Francisco University, and Lisa Tillman of Rollins College discussed creative ways to engage in scholarly and teaching activities beyond traditional outlets.
On Friday, Arvind Singhal of the University of Texas, El Paso, delivered the Carroll C. Arnold Distinguished Lecture. Singhal explored Positive Deviance, arguing that the approach can be used to effect individual, organizational, and social change.
To close the convention, NCA President Carole Blair of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, delivered a presidential address entitled, “The Tipping Point: The Higher Education Establishment as Public Good.” NCA First Vice President Christina Beck then presented this year’s NCA Awards to more than 30 distinguished members of the Communication discipline.
An array of other activities also took place during Convention, including meetings and interactions with a delegation of international scholars from China facilitated by Stephen J. Hartnett, NCA Second Vice President.
The convention also featured the Graduate School Open House, where prospective students were able to learn more about Communication programs at colleges and universities nationwide. And this year’s NCA Job Fair provided attendees with two dynamic presentations for job seekers. The first presentation featured Elizabeth Baiocchi-Wagner, who provided advice aboutcareer opportunities outside of academia and shared her personal transition. During the second presentation, Claire Procopio discussed strategies for anticipatingquestions and formulating meaningful responses during academic job interviews.
