CIDD British Debate Tour Comes to a Close in Las Vegas
he 2015 Fall British Debate Team’s tour kicked off on September 27 at Irvine Valley College in Irvine, CA. Sponsored by the NCA Committee on International Discussion and Debate, which promotes international understanding and the practice of communication through discussion and debates between students from the United States and those from other nations, the tour stopped at 23 host colleges across the country. The CIDD debaters also stopped at Oregon State Penitentiary and debated inmates there.
Debaters addressed a variety of topics including legalization of marijuana, whether gender equity is possible, and whether teacher pay should be performance-based.
British Debate Team members Matthew Willmore and Francesca Whalen ended their tour with a debate at the NCA’s 101st Annual Convention in Las Vegas.
“It’s been the most phenomenal experience,” said Whalen after her last debate in Vegas. “We’ve had the opportunity to see a good breadth of the diversity the United States has to offer, and we’ve met some incredible people. I genuinely think that it has been life changing. It has certainly made me rethink a lot of the ways I understood the world.”
