SUMMARY:Communicating in the Battlegrounds: Politics in the Purple States
DESCRIPTION:Because of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 outbreak\, NCA was unable to hold the Public Program previously scheduled for April 30\, 2020 in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin. NCA instead hosted this conversation as a podcast episode. Please visit the NCA Podcast page to listen to this episode. \nIn a presidential election year\, a select number of states are viewed as critical players in the election’s outcome. With the 2020 election approaching\, NCA is focusing its spring public programming efforts on political communication\, specifically in battleground states. Expert panelists will address this topic at “Communicating in the Battlegrounds: Politics in the Purple States\,” an NCA public program recorded as a podcast. Panelists will discuss the use of political communication in our elections and explore the effects it has on public opinion.  \nModerator\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTrevor Parry-Giles\, Executive Director\, National Communication Association\nTrevor Parry-Giles graduated from Ripon College and holds an M.A. from the University of New Mexico and a Ph.D. from Indiana University. In addition to his NCA position\, he is a professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Maryland where he is also an affiliate faculty member with the Department of African American Studies and the Graduate School Field Committee in Film Studies. \nDr. Parry-Giles’s research and teaching focus on the historical and contemporary relationships between rhetoric\, politics\, law\, and popular culture. He is the award-winning author or editor of four books and his research has appeared in the Quarterly Journal of Speech\, Rhetoric & Public Affairs\, Presidential Studies Quarterly\, Critical Studies in Mass Communication\, the Journal of Communication\, and elsewhere. \nDr. Parry-Giles is a Distinguished Research Fellow and a Distinguished Teaching Fellow of the Eastern Communication Association. In 2019\, Parry-Giles received the University of Maryland’s Graduate Faculty Mentor of the Year Award. \n  \n\n\n\n \nPanelists\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSuamana Chattopadhyay\, Associate Professor\, Marquette University\nSumana Chattopadhyay is an Associate Professor in the Diederich College of Communication at Marquette University. Her research interests focus on political advertising\, public opinion\, media use and political participation and cross-cultural media coverage of crises. She published work focusing on the 04\, ’08 and ’16 U.S. presidential campaigns. She is the Chair of the National Communication Association’s Political Communication Division and Vice Chair of the Media and Diaspora working group of the International Association for Media and Communication Research.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nYoung Mie Kim\, Professor\, University of Wisconsin-Madison\nYoung Mie Kim is a Professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a 2019 Andrew Carnegie Fellow. Kim’s research concerns data-driven\, algorithm-based\, digitally mediated political communication. Kim testified at the Federal Election Commission‘s hearings on the rulemaking of internet communication disclaimers and presented her research at the Congressional briefings on foreign interference in elections. Kim spoke at the European Parliament on her research on data-driven political advertising and inequality in political involvement.   \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRobert Kraig\, Executive Director\, Citizen Action of Wisconsin\nRobert Kraig is the Executive Director of Citizen Action of Wisconsin and is the author of several major academic articles on American political rhetoric. Kraig is a leading strategist in the Wisconsin progressive movement\, and is especially known for developing innovative approaches to strategic communication and issue campaign design and implementation. He has also appeared on major national and international media outlets such as Fox News\, MSNBC\, Al Jazeera\, Democracy Now\, several syndicated radio programs\, and is a regular panelist on the PBS program International Focus. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThomas A. Salek\, Assistant Professor of Communication\, Concordia University Chicago\nThomas A. Salek is an Assistant Professor of Communication at Concordia University Chicago. His research investigates presidential rhetoric\, political campaigns\, popular culture\, and strategic responses to public controversies. Currently\, he is working on a research project that outlines examples of nonpartisan rhetoric and an attitude of goodwill in the contemporary political environment. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nShawn Turner\, Professor of Practice\, Strategic Communication\, Michigan State University\nShawn Turner is a Professor of Strategic Communication at Michigan State University\, and a National Security Communication Analyst for CNN. Turner’s research interests include examining the role of disinformation in decision making related to civic engagement\, and the use of persuasive communication strategies in extremist ideology.    \nTurner was previously the Director of Communication for U.S. National Intelligence\, Assistant Press Secretary for Foreign Affairs at the National Security Council\, and Deputy White House Press Secretary for National Security. SUMMARY:2019 NCA Legacy Scholarship Call for Nominations
DESCRIPTION:The National Communication Association invites students to apply and compete for the NCA Legacy Scholarship award. The NCA Legacy Scholarship seeks to broaden the Communication discipline’s relevance to various publics by providing a $1\,000 scholarship to a local college student pursuing a degree in Communication\, Journalism\, or related program within the host city/region where the NCA Annual Convention is being held. A $250 award will go to the runner up.  The scholarship award will be competitively given to a student based on both an essay related to communication and civic responsibility\, and a convention theme-related speech presented during the NCA Annual Convention. The 2019 Annual Convention will be held November 14-17\, 2019\, in Baltimore\, Maryland. For more information on the Annual Convention\, please visit www.natcom.org/convention.  \nThere are several criteria for award eligibility: \n\nApplicant must be an undergraduate college student\, (preference given to self-identified first-generation college students)\, with at least one year of postsecondary education remaining at an accredited college or university.\nApplicant must be attending a college or university within the city/region where the NCA Annual Convention is being held – this means within the region of Baltimore/Washington\, DC. (Should you have questions about if your college/university is within the local region\, please contact the committee chair).\nApplicant must be pursuing a degree in communication\, journalism\, or related program.\nApplicant must have a 3.0 GPA or higher.\nApplicant must not have received this award previously.\n\nFive semi-finalists will be selected based on the quality of their written essays. The semi-finalists will then compete in a speech contest to be held during the Annual Convention. Submission of the nomination material indicates the willingness of the applicant to attend and participate in the Legacy Scholarship speech competition\, where the applicant will deliver a 5-7 minute informative or persuasive speech related to the convention theme during the annual convention.  \nThe first-place winner of the speech competition will receive an engraved plaque presented at the Awards Ceremony during the Annual Convention supported by NCA until 2026 and then the NCA Legacy Scholarship Fund starting in 2027. The plaque will be personalized and sent to the winner following the convention. The first-place winner will also receive a $1\,000 monetary scholarship award supported by NCA until 2026 and then the NCA Legacy Scholarship Fund starting in 2027. The runner-up will receive a $250 monetary award.  All participants in the speech contest portion will receive $50 for travel expenses to the conference. \nEach semi-finalist will receive a free convention registration as well as on-site parking for the day of the speech contest. \nSubmission Information \nNominations must be sent to the Selection Committee Chairperson\, Brian Grewe at briangrewe@gmail.com. Self-nominations are encouraged. Anderson\, Ph.D.\, Director of Academic and Professional Affairs\, National Communication Association\nLaKesha N. Anderson is the Director of Academic and Professional Affairs at the National Communication Association and a faculty member in the Johns Hopkins University’s MA in Communication Program. Anderson holds a Ph.D. from George Mason University. Her research on health\, risk\, and crisis communication has been featured in several journals and books. Immediately prior to joining NCA\, she was an Assistant Professor of Communication at Indiana State University.  \n\n\n\nPanelists\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmy Cilimburg\, Climate Smart Missoula\nAmy Cilimburg is the Executive Director of Climate Smart Missoula\, where she advocates for climate solutions and works to build networks and community resiliency. She helped launch Climate Smart in 2015 following efforts to develop Missoula’s municipal and community Climate Action Plans and has worked on climate and energy policy and conservation for over a decade. Cilimburg holds an M.S. degree in Wildlife Biology from the University of Montana. She is presently Board Chair of the Missoula’s Mountain Line Transit System\, is on the Board of the Missoula Chapter of Montana Conservation Voters\, and was recently appointed to the Governor’s Climate Solutions Council.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMatthew Frank\, Fellow in Regional Journalism\, O’Connor Center for the Rocky Mountain West\nA Missoula-based journalist and educator\, Matthew Frank is currently a Fellow in Regional Journalism at the O’Connor Center for the Rocky Mountain West at the University of Montana\, where he edits Mountain West News. He regularly teaches the Wild Rockies Field Institute course\, “Cycle the Rockies: Energy and Climate Change in Montana.” Frank has also taught in the University of Montana School of Journalism’s graduate program in Environmental Science and Natural Resource Journalism. His work has won several regional and national awards\, including a first-place prize for beat reporting from the Society of Environmental Journalists.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeter McDonough\, Climate Change Studies Program Coordinator\, University of Montana\nPeter McDonough began teaching as an education volunteer with the Peace Corps in Tanzania\, where he lived and taught high school for three years. Since returning home\, he has worked primarily in climate change education\, developing climate and energy classes for Stanford University’s summer institutes and for the University of Montana within Environmental Studies\, Climate Change Studies\, and the Global Leadership Initiative. McDonough holds a B.S. in Physics from the University of Puget Sound\, an M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford\, and an M.S. in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNick Mott\, Producer\, Threshold\nNick Mott is the producer at Threshold\, a podcast and radio show. Season two\, Cold Comfort\, told the story of climate change in the Arctic through the eyes of the people who live there. The show was recognized with a national Edward R. Murrow award. Mott has also worked as a reporter at Montana Public Radio\, where his coverage has earned him accolades from the Associated Press. Through his audio reporting\, Mott has found himself trapping grizzly bears\, chasing sled dogs\, and tracking lynx via snowmobile\, microphone in hand. His work in audio\, photography\, and writing has appeared in NPR’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered\, Outside\, PRI’s The World\, the Mountain West News Bureau\, The Washington Post\, Kaiser Health News\, Alpinist\, and more. Mott is also producer at the MTPR podcast\, Richest Hill. He holds an M.A. in environmental journalism from the University of Colorado Boulder. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSteve Schwarze\, Professor of Communication Studies and Director\, Climate Change Studies Program\, University of Montana\nSteve Schwarze is a Professor of Communication Studies in the University of Montana’s Department of Communication Studies Program\, and Director of the Climate Change Studies Program. His research focuses on rhetoric and public discourse\, with a specific focus in environmental rhetoric. Schwarze’s work on the rhetoric of environmental controversies has been published in the Quarterly Journal of Speech\, Rhetoric & Public Affairs\, and Environmental Communication\, and he is a three-time recipient of the NCA Environmental Communication Division’s Christine L. Oravec Research Award. DESCRIPTION:NCA Governance\, Council\, and Award Committee Members\nNCA seeks members to serve on a variety of governance and award selection committees. Unless otherwise indicated in a specific call below\, nominations are reviewed by the NCA Leadership Development Committee. The recommendations of the Leadership Development Committee are then considered by the Legislative Assembly\, which formally approves appointments. The strength of the Association relies in significant part on informed responses to the questions that come before the Legislative Assembly. The business at the LA meetings is legally governed by the NCA Constitution and Bylaws\, and decisions are guided by the Association’s strategic plan. The Legislative Assembly shall exercise fiduciary responsibility over the affairs of NCA and is responsible for the overall strategic direction and policymaking of the Association (Bylaws Article III\, Section 3). \nExpectations: The Legislative Assembly meets as a body each year in tandem with NCA’s annual convention and is the principal policy making body of the Association. There is typically a full afternoon session the day before the convention begins\, as well as a shorter morning session on Saturday. \nAdditional work is completed electronically throughout the year. Officers\, directors\, trustees (the LA and its EC who are listed on the IRS Form 990)\, key employees\, substantial contributors or employees thereof\, and grant selection committee members are not eligible to receive grants from NCA. General duties and responsibilities for members of the Legislative Assembly include: \n\nattending the Legislative Assembly meetings held during the Annual Convention and\nreviewing\, deliberating\, and voting in respect to Association matters as brought forth to the Legislative Assembly.\n\nQualifications: Nominees can be at any stage of their professional lives. As members of the Executive Committee\, Finance Committee members are expected to attend two meetings in the Washington\, DC area each year (travel expenses covered by NCA) as well as an Executive Committee meeting and the Legislative Assembly meeting at the NCA Annual Convention each year. Finance Committee members meet for an additional day preceding the summer DC Executive Committee meeting\, and otherwise convene via conference calls and communicate electronically. Brommel Award for Outstanding Scholarship or Distinguished Service in Family Communication recognizes outstanding scholarship or distinguished service in family communication. The purpose of the award is to recognize an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the area of family communication. The program seeks to broaden the scope of international educational and cultural exchanges by providing a channel for the exchange of ideas and attitudes among students and young people in America and throughout the world; make possible informal meetings among students\, college and university personnel\, and the general citizenry of participating countries; facilitate the exchange of information and ideas about the educational systems of the countries involved; reinforce the importance of dialogue as a preferred means for resolving international and intercultural differences; maintain and enhance the ties between the National Communication Association and forensics organizations\, forensics programs\, and their sponsoring academic departments throughout the United States; and provide opportunities to enhance the understanding and appreciation of the discipline of communication both in other nations and in the United States. \nQualifications: Nominees should be at the mid-stage level or beyond in their careers. SUMMARY:Distinguished Scholar Selection Committee
DESCRIPTION:Three positions to serve staggered terms starting immediately \nPerson A: 2019-2020 term (Chair in 2019\, 2020) \nPerson B: 2019-2021 term (Chair in 2021) \nPerson C: 2019-2022 term (Chair in 2022) \n\nThe NCA Distinguished Scholar Award was created in 1991 to recognize NCA members for a lifetime of scholarly achievement in the study of communication. Recipients are selected to reflect excellence within the communication profession. \nA distinguished research career is operationally defined as a person who has at least 20 complete years of scholarly contributions since their Ph.D. was awarded. Breadth and quantity should be considered in the selection process\, but it should not in any way override considerations of depth and quality. The Distinguished Scholar selection process should reflect NCA’s mission statement with regard to those honored: “NCA supports inclusiveness and diversity among our faculties\, within our membership\, in the workplace\, and in the classroom; NCA supports and promotes policies that fairly encourage this diversity and inclusion.” No more than five Distinguished Scholars will be named each year; one award each year may be posthumous. \nExpectations: Committee members are responsible for disseminating the award nomination call to help ensure full dissemination beyond the open call circulated by NCA’s Executive Director. In alignment with NCA’s commitment to diversity\, equity\, and inclusion\, the Executive Director will disseminate the annual call to the Chairs and Vice-Chairs of all six NCA caucuses. Additionally\, Committee members are required to review\, evaluate\, deliberate\, and select the recipients as prescribed by the award guidelines. Committee Chairs are responsible for coordinating the work of the Selection Committee and ensuring all deadlines are met. \nInitially\, one member (Person A) will be selected for a term starting immediately and continuing through 2020 and will serve as chair for that term. He is the 2014 recipient of the NCA Environmental Communication Division’s J. Robert Cox Award for Environmental Communication and Civic Engagement. He has also won the Christine Oravec Research Award (2014) and the Tarla Peterson Award for the Environmental Communication Book of the Year (2016). DESCRIPTION:The Committee for International Discussion and Debate (CIDD) of the National Communication Association (NCA) announces the call for applicants for the 2019 Japan Tour \nEvery other year\, the CIDD coordinates with the Japan Debate Association to send two debaters and a coach to Japan. Tour participants take part in a wide range of activities including debates\, workshops\, and lectures at Japanese universities\, high schools\, and community group events. \nApproximate Dates of Travel:  Early June to early July 2019 \nEligibility: Any past or present forensic participant who is under 25 years old and is a full time undergraduate in good standing (juniors and seniors preferred)\, or who has received an undergraduate degree but is still no older than 25\, is eligible. We encourage applications from students active in all forms of debate\, including Lincoln-Douglas debate\, team policy debate\, and parliamentary debate. Students who apply should have (or plan to obtain) a valid current passport. \nEvaluation: Students will be evaluated on the basis of their debating skills and their ability to teach debate basics in a variety of formats. Knowledge of political\, social\, and cultural conditions around the globe is a must. The student’s ability to represent the United States and American forensics (in all its forms) accurately\, effectively\, and professionally is a strong consideration. Therefore\, applicants are encouraged to discuss their experience with different forms of debate and individual events in their letter of interest. The ability to educate students about the style and substance of debate in the United States is an important component of the tour. Standing as the world’s two largest economies\, marshaling the most imposing armies on Earth\, holding enormous stockpiles of nuclear weapons\, consuming a majority share of the planet’s natural resources\, and serving as the media generators and health care providers for billions of consumers around the globe\, the two nations are positioned to influence notions of democracy\, nationalism\, citizenship\, human rights\, environmental priorities\, and public health for the foreseeable future. These broad issues all fundamentally amount to questions about communication; about how our two nations envision each other and how our interlinked imaginaries create both opportunities and obstacles for greater understanding and strengthened relations. Acknowledging this context—and the crucial importance of communication between\, about\, and in the United States and China—the Visiting Fellows Program for Communication and Media Research (VFP) will provide a unique space for collaboration\, wherein NCA members and our Chinese colleagues will work alongside\, study with\, and learn from one another\, thus providing a wonderful opportunity for communication scholars to begin their journey toward international understanding and collaboration.\nOur Partner\nThe VFP will be hosted on the campus of the Communication University of China (hereafter CUC). CUC is one of the top-ranked universities in China\, is a national leader in the study of communication and the training of leaders in a wide array of media industries\, and\, over the past three years\, partnered with NCA in co-hosting the biennial summer conferences on “Communication\, Media\, and Governance in the Age of Globalization.” The CUC campus is tucked into a leafy neighborhood on the east side of Beijing and offers a unique vantage point for studying communication in the age of globalization.\nThe Fellowship\nFellows will serve one-semester appointments-in-residence. Fall Fellows will serve September1 through the end of December; Spring Fellows will serve February 1 through the end of May. During this one-semester residency\, Fellows will not teach. Fellows will conduct research on their proposed projects in line with the VFP’s annual theme (see section on theme below)\, and they will be responsible for delivering four public talks\, workshops\, or other scholarly programs meant to advance NCA’s mission\, the broad goals of the VFP\, and the interests of intercultural collaboration. NCA and CUC will each select one Fellow for each academic term\, so the VFP will consist of two Fellows each term (or four per academic year). Fellows will be guided in their work by the NCA’s “Credo for Ethical Communication\,” which offers robust support for free speech\, intellectual inquiry\, and intercultural sensitivity. CUC endorses this document’s values and norms.\nHousing and Travel\nNCA will provide each Fellow with a travel-support package of up to $2\,000 to cover one roundtrip ticket from his or her home to Beijing and back\, and other incidental transportation costs (this may include the costs of securing a visa or passport\, or other such costs). NCA will not pay Fellows any salary.\n \nEach Fellow will receive free housing from CUC\, which will host each Fellow in its on-campus housing (similar to a U.S.-style International House\, where the Fellow will have a small apartment with bedroom\, kitchen\, bathroom\, and living area). Each Fellow will be provided with an office on the CUC campus and will enjoy full library privileges\, along with the other support needed to be productive. All Fellows are expected to actively participate in the scholarly life of the CUC campus.
