Health research--Medtronic Fnd
Medtronic Foundation grants focus in three areas: Health, Education,
and Community. In all focus areas, priority is given to programs that
benefit people who are socioeconomically disadvantaged.
Health Focus
The Foundation's health grantmaking supports
programs that enable patients and their families to participate
confidently in their own healthcare. We give special consideration to
projects or programs that address diseases or conditions in which
Medtronic, Inc. offers therapies or treatments. There are three
categories for our health grantmaking.
1) Full
Life Patient Partnership is a five-year, $15 million, flagship
health initiative dedicated to improving the quality of individuals
with chronic illnesses and conditions. The three programs in this
initiative are:
Patient Link - which
empowers patients with chronic cardiovascular and neurological
conditions through support of pre-selected patient associations. (By
Invitation Only)
Health Center Leadership
Grant - which support selected programs at nationally recognized
research education institutions that empower patients and care for the
whole person through comprehensive, integrative care models. (By
Invitation Only)
HeartRescue - which
funds organizations and government agencies that provide
community-based education, training, and awareness programs related to
sudden cardiac death and the use of automatic external defibrillators.
This program does not provide grants for the purchase of AED
equipment.
2) Health in the Community provides support for programs in
Medtronic communities that provide healthcare to cultural communities
and to those most vulnerable. Priority is given to programs that
encourage the development and maintenance of healthy lifestyles and
involve those most affected by the problem in developing and
delivering the solution.
3) Healthy
Countries supports programs in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou
and Western China; Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Gujarat, India; Kenya;
and Mexico.
EDUCATION FOCUS
Our concentration on education allows us to ignite and sustain
students' natural curiosity in science, especially for those
populations traditionally underrepresented in science. Three education
programs serve students from the elementary through post secondary
levels.
1) STAR
(Science and Technology Are Rewarding) The Foundation's
primary concentration within education is on kindergarten through
grade 12 science education programs under STAR (Science and Technology
Are Rewarding) This grant initiative designed to stimulate and sustain
the interest of young people in science. Schools, school districts and
nonprofit organizations in Medtronic communities are eligible. Grant
guidelines are available from the Medtronic Foundation in Minneapolis
and from Medtronic U.S. facilities.
In addition to STAR grants, limited funding is available for other
education programs that have a lasting impact on children. Grants are
not available for regular school district obligations such as teacher
salaries, textbooks or capital improvements.
2) Post-Secondary Education: Grants support scholarships and
fellowships that promote science, engineering, and health related
interests at colleges and universities.
3) Education in the Community: A limited number of grants are
provided to support economic education, and after school and summer
programs that address specific community needs.
COMMUNITY FOCUS
Our community grants contribute to the vitality of the communities
where Medtronic employees' live and work. Community giving includes
grants for:
1) Human Services*- which support programs in Medtronic
communities that address locals needs.
*In the Minneapolis - St. Paul area, the grantmaking focus is on
health and education. As of May 2000, the Medtronic Foundation no
longer makes new human services grants in the Twin Cities. The
Foundation is working with a limited number of human service
organizations to provide transition funds.
2) United Way- which supports employee-giving campaigns.
3) Arts/Culture/Civic- which supports increasing access to
the arts, helping cultural organizations make a significant
contribution to the life of the community, and assisting civic
organization in addressing the needs of disadvantaged people. NOTE:
The deadline for Minneapolis/St. Paul Arts applications is June 1.
