Various--Met Life Fnd
The Metropolitan Life Foundation was established in 1976 by MetLife
for the purpose of supporting various educational, health and welfare,
and civic and cultural organizations. The primary objective of the
Foundation is to assist tax-exempt organizations through a program of
financial support, particularly in the communities in which MetLife
has a major presence. Our goals are to strengthen communities, promote
good health and improve education. The Foundation continues a
tradition of corporate
contributions and community involvement begun by MetLife at the
turn of the century.

Health
To help people make more informed decisions about their
health, grants are directed toward national health promotion
and education initiatives, particularly for young people.
Emphasis is given to substance abuse prevention, HIV/AIDS
education and prevention, school health education and
promoting healthy life styles. Support is also provided for
research on Alzheimer's disease.
Education
MetLife's longstanding commitment to education is underscored
by its support of education-based activities in precollege
education, business, insurance and economic education, and
higher education.
Culture
In recognition of the arts' contribution to the health,
vitality and development of our communities, Metropolitan Life
Foundation and MetLife provide grants to a variety of cultural
organizations throughout the country. Support for projects
with large and diverse audiences that help promote greater
understanding among different cultures is emphasized. In
addition, grants are made for arts education initiatives that
contribute to the development of young people.
Civic
Affairs
Foundation grants help to address the challenges that face
children, families, minority groups, and the disadvantaged by
supporting programs that improve community services and
provide employment training and social services.
Anti-Violence
The Metropolitan Life Foundation's Positive Choices: Youth
Anti-Violence Initiatives grant competition makes grants to
nonprofit organizations for projects that provide
education-based activities to address problems associated with
youth violence. From 1994 - 1996, a total of $1.5 million was
awarded to 15 organizations.
Social
Investment Program
Since 1984, the Social Investment Program has made commitments
of over $200 million in Program Related Investments to create
affordable housing, promote economic development and deliver
social and health services to low income people. In 1994, a
new social investment component was added using MetLife
Company funds to supplement the Foundation's activity. This
component is highlighted in our Social
Investment Program.
