| Several times in the past, and most recently in 1995, the
National Research Council (NRC) has conducted assessments of doctoral programs
at research universities. Commonly known as the "NRC rankings,"
assessments have been somewhat controversial but widely influential within
and outside of higher education. Early in 2002, the NRC appointed a
committee to ask if another assessment ought to be done, and, if so, what
the methodology of that study should be. NCA has argued that communication should be
included in the NRC's next study of
research doctorates. To the left is a link to Executive Director James
Gaudino's article on NCA's presentation to the National Research Council.
The PowerPoint presentation to NRC, "Communication: A Research
Discipline," is also linked to the left.
