Obtaining private funding
NCA members might find the following tools
at The Foundation Center to be useful for obtaining funding from private
foundations:
USING THE FOUNDATION CENTER'S "FC STATS"
http://fdncenter.org/fc_stats
FC Stats is a free online resource that provides
ready access to a wealth of statistical data on U.S. private and
community foundations and their funding patterns.
FC Stats features more than 760 data tables and ranked lists
representing the most frequently requested types of summary financial
data on foundations and their grants.
A number of tables in FC Stats pertain to giving
for health. In the Funding
by Subject Area section (http://fdncenter.org/fc_stats/gs_subject.html),
the "Distribution of Grants by Subject Categories" chart
depicts how grants are distributed across a range of subject areas.
This chart allows you to compare the percentage of grant dollars
and grants given for health with those given in other subject areas.
FC Stats includes tables listing the top 50 funders
by subject (http://fdncenter.org/fc_stats/subject01.html).
Among these are tables listing the top 50 funders in health
overall as well as the top 50 funders in four subfields: reproductive
health, public health, medical research and mental health.
There are also charts listing the top 50 recipients
by subject (http://fdncenter.org/fc_stats/subject02.html),
including tables for the top 50 health recipients as well as the top 50
recipients in the four health subfields noted above.
In the Population Served section of FC Stats
(http://fdncenter.org/fc_stats/gs_pop.html),
you can find the top 50 funders and top 50 recipients in two
health-related categories: grants benefiting People with AIDS and
Substance Abusers.
For just-released information about current trends
in health giving, see the Foundation Center's 2001 "Health Funding
Update" new at our Web site at http://fdncenter.org/research/trends_analysis/index.html.
This report is based on 1999 data and also includes estimated
total health giving figures for 2000.
