Permissions Policy of the National Communication Association

PHOTOCOPIES

Copies of material in NCA journals and books may be made for scholarly or classroom use if

  1. the material is distributed without charges above the cost of photocopying, the cost of releases, and the cost of packaging or binding;
  2. there will be no markup or expectation of profit on material copied;
  3. the materials are reproductions, photocopies or copies made by similar processes and not reprints or republications;
  4. copies are used within nine (9) months after reproduction;
  5. the material includes the full bibliographic citation; and
  6. the following statement is clearly displayed on all copies: "Copyright by the National Communication Association. Date. Reproduced by permission of the publisher." A copy of this statement serves as the National Communication Association's official permission for using material for scholarly or educational purposes under the above conditions.

NCA permission does not extend to situations in which

  1. extensive amounts of material reproduced or stored in an electronic or similar data retrieval system;
  2. a fee above actual duplicating costs is charged or if there exists an expectation of profit; or
  3. the material is reproduced or reprinted for other than scholarly or educational purposes.

If any of these three conditions exists, permission must be obtained prior to reproduction. NCA will assess a fee according to the "Reprints" policy listed below.

Brief portions of material in NCA journals and books, such as charts, graphs, and outlines may be copied in their entirety and without change for non-commercial purposes without prior permission from NCA. The appropriate citation of the source of the excerpt must be included in such copying.

REPRINTS

Permission to reprint NCA copyright materials for commercial purposes must be obtained from NCA. The fee to reprint is $10.00 per original copyright page.

Permissions requests for all books, serial publications, Communication Teacher, and other communication texts should be sent to Jennifer Peltak at the address below:

A reasonable effort must also be made to contact the original author(s) of the copyright material for concurrence.

To quote short passages (75-word maximum) from NCA copyrighted documents for commercial purposes, prior permission from NCA is not required as long as quotes are made in their entirety, without change, and appropriate credit is given.

Permission is granted only for the edition being applied for, in all languages and worldwide distribution. Reprint rights have been extended to special non-profit editions for use by the handicapped.

The credit line for reprinted material should include the following: title, authors/editors, publication, volume, number, date, page(s). "Used by permission of the National Communication Association."
