Resolution Endorsing Comprehensive Language Arts

(approved by the NCA Legislative Council in 1996)


Whereas
, many educational publications and organizations use the term English Language Arts to describe the school curricular programs that combine the teaching of speaking, listening, reading, writing and media literacy, and

Whereas, the term English may be perceived as indicating a specific language or an emphasis on reading and writing, and

Whereas, the term English Language Arts may lead to a misunderstanding of the nature of the curriculum offerings,

Resolved, that the National Communication Association endorses the use of the term Comprehensive Language Arts to describe the school curricular programs that combine the teaching of speaking, listening, reading, writing and media literacy.
