Symbolism, Community, and Recovery at Virginia Tech
Read Rachel L. Holloway’s contemplations on the effect the Virginia Tech shootings have had on the campus and community. Holloway, the Head of the Department of Communication at Virginia Tech, discusses how communication helped the school and community recover from the shock of the event and how they eventually discovered their purpose as a community. Her essay can be found in the National Communication Association’s online magazine Communication Currents at

The Journal of International and Intercultural Communication publishes scholarship for an international readership on international and intercultural communication from a range of theoretical, conceptual and methodological perspectives. The Journal features leading edge inquiry that cuts across academic boundaries to focus on international, intercultural, as well as indigenous communication issues. A nation-state should not necessarily be synonymous with a single culture as nation-states might be more productively viewed as comprising multiple cultures, nor should a culture be thought of as bounded by national boundaries, as cultures may cross the boundaries of multiple nation-states.
