NCA's Webinar Series

About NCA's Webinar Series

NCA's webinars, an electronic discussion over the Internet in a radio talk show style format, are designed to showcase the work of NCA members and communication scholars. The webinar technology also allows listeners to join the conversation and to ask questions. The only technology required for participants is high speed Internet capability and the presence of a microphone, which many computers now feature.

2009 NCA Webinar Series
    • What role, if any, have racial prejudices played in the resistance to President Obama’s reform programs? Following Representative Joe Wilson’s outburst during the president’s speech before a joint session of Congress on September 9, former president Jimmy Carter proclaimed racism as a major motive behind the resistance to Obama’s proposed reforms on health care and other issues. NCA brings together an elite group of panelists who have done extensive research on race and communication to examine the issue.
    • Featuring: David Frank, Ph.D., University of Oregon; Ronald Jackson, Ph.D., University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign; Mark McPhail, Ph.D., Southern Methodist University; and Catherine Squires, Ph.D., University of Minnesota
    •  NCA brings together for a Webinar three prominent scholars of public debate and civic engagement to discuss what the debates over health care reform tell us about the possibilities and the limits of public discussion in the United States.
    • Featuring: Pat Gehrke, University of South Carolina; Gordon Mitchell, University of Pittsburgh; and Shawn Parry-Giles, University of Maryland
    • As the topic of health care dominates the Obama administration’s agenda, NCA brings together a group of panelists to analyze Obama’s most recent rhetoric for health care reform. These experts in presidential rhetoric will participate in an online conversation analyzing and offering insight on President Obama’s speech to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday evening.
    • Featuring: Vanessa Beasley, Ph.D., Vanderbilt University, Denise Bostdorff, Ph.D., College of Wooster; Trevor Parry-Giles, Ph.D., University of Maryland

Please note: The NCA Webinars use Elluminate, a cross-platform, Java, Web-based environment. When you click on a Webinar link, Elluminate will download to your computer some temporary Java components that will allow you to operate in the Elluminate environment on the Web and view the Webinar. If you agree, once the components have downloaded (which takes only a minute or two), you will be taken directly to the Webinar "room." The downloaded components are only temporary, which means that no permanent changes are made to software on your computer, but it also means that these components will have to reload every time you visit a Webinar.
