Request for Proposals
Projects that Advance the Discipline of Communication
Funded by the National Communication Association
Deadline: February 15, 2010

NCA is requesting proposals for work that will advance the discipline of communication. While there are many funding outlets for communication scholars to seek support for disciplinary research, NCA is uniquely positioned to support projects that are focused on the discipline itself. Projects should reach beyond a single department, campus, or NCA unit. Projects might include the following, among several other possibilities:

  • Collection of data about departments in the discipline
  • Collection of data about disciplinary career trajectories
  • Development of innovative practices for teaching communication
  • Implementation of a mentoring program for young scholars in the discipline
  • Study of some dimension of the history of the discipline
  • Identification of new approaches for disseminating disciplinary research to non-academic audiences
  • Development of an approach for diversifying the discipline

A few examples of projects funded in the past through this fund are:

  • Development of a registry of members of the discipline who have received funding for conducting research or special projects including a description of the project, how much money was granted, and the name of the funder
  • Creation of a video documentary about seven women pioneers in the discipline of communication (currently in their 70s and 80s) who developed careers in the academic workplace
  • Investigation of past and present college and university presidents who hold an academic degree in communication
  • Creation of a Web site that promotes the study of great speeches and public debates in undergraduate humanities classrooms (partial support)

Requests for funding may not exceed $5,000. Preference is given to stand-alone projects, but partial funding of larger projects will be considered provided that the funding is allocated to a specific piece of the larger endeavor. Funds may not be used to augment the budget of NCA convention-related activity.

Eligibility

Principal Investigators must be NCA members at the time of submission. Investigators may only receive a grant from this fund once.
