NCA Doctoral Honors Seminar

Communication Research in the Next 100 Years:
Evolving Issues, Theoretical Tensions and Methodological Pluralism

University of Utah
July 30 - August 2, 2010

Theme

The theme for the 2010 Doctoral Honors Seminar continues to prepare for the 100th anniversary of the National Communication Association. It invites participants to look forward to issues, theories, and methods that are evolving in communication research as we move toward a second century of communication scholarship.

Approximately 30 doctoral students were selected to participate in the 2010 Seminar. Students will be placed into one of three work groups, each of which will be lead by three faculty members. Working together, the three faculty members and the 10 students will discuss the submitted papers as well as engage in discussions of the theoretical, methodological, ethical, and practical issues involved in conducting research that might come to define the next century of communication scholarship.

Students were selected based on the submission of a paper that centers on communication scholarship across any field of communication study (e.g., health, interpersonal, organizational, rhetoric, cultural studies, environmental, ethics, mediated, mass) or methodological paradigm (e.g., quantitative, qualitative, critical, rhetorical).

While not an exhaustive list, selected papers work toward:

    • Introducing one or more research problem that communication scholarship should address
    • Suggesting how a specific theory or set of theories can be used to approach a contemporary communication issue
    • Evaluating the merits of conducting scholarship through a particular methodological paradigm or the use of mixed paradigms
    • Exploring contemporary issues involved in communication theory development
    • Analyzing a social issue or address a social problem from an applied perspective (e.g., communication activism, social justice, practical theory)
