Return to Convention and Conferences

Conferences

NCA has a tradition of hosting small conferences, seminars and workshops during the summer.  These events offer a more flexible meeting format than that available at the NCA Annual Convention.

These meetings are official events of NCA and are funded by NCA's operating fund and managed by its National Office, under the direction of the elected governance.

Currently, NCA's conference program consists of:

  •

NCA Summer Conference.  The goal of the summer conference is to provide a forum for concentrated discussion on a limited number of topics,  The topic of the summer conferences varies from year to year.  Some have been devoted to exploring research issues relative to a particular topic (e.g., cultural studies, health communication). Others have focused on exploration of issues related to educational and instructional issues (e.g.., assessment and testing, public relations curriculum). Still others have featured working sessions designed to produce a specific outcome (e.g., racial and ethnic diversity, technology in the classroom).

  •

NCA International Conferences.  International Conferences support NCA's  leadership role in promoting and facilitating international communication research.  The conferences are designed to promote international communication colloquia featuring international scholars and major research institutions in other countries.

  •

Doctoral Honors Seminars.  Doctoral Seminars are designed to bring together the best students and faculty members to discuss current topics within the themes of Rhetorical Theory and Research, Communication Theory and Research, and Mass Communication Theory and Research.  The seminar sessions are lead by three scholars representing each area of interest. Approximately 10 to 15 students attend the seminar in each of the areas. The students are selected from a national competition based on submitted papers and recommendations from advisors.

NCA Co-sponsored Conferences

NCA also has a tradition of co-sponsoring small conferences, seminars and workshops that are primarily organized and operated by other organizations.  The value of NCA's co-sponsorship varies, depending on goals of the conference and the nature of the hosting organization.  NCA frequently is asked to lend is support in terms of promoting the event.

NCA Regional Conferences

The four regional associations that are affiliated with NCA - Eastern Communication Association, Southern States Communication Association, Western States Communication Association and Central States Communication Association - all hosts annual conferences.
