Publications

Journals are the foundation of NCA's publication program.  Each of the six  quarterly journals publish peer reviewed articles on a wide range of communication topics.  The journals are edited by distinguished NCA members.  Subscription to one or more of NCA's journals is a primary benefit of membership in the association.

Communication Education published in January, April, July and October, serves the needs of communication educators. Its pages include reports of research, articles on teaching, and reviews of both print and non­print learning resources.
Communication Monographs, published in March, June, September and December, is devoted mainly to scientific and empirical investigations of communication processes. CM studies frequently use the methodologies of the social sciences.
Critical Studies in Mass Communication, published in March, June, September and December, focuses exclusively on the range of critical perspectives which help define the expanding area of mass communication research.
Journal of Applied Communication Research, published in February, May, August, and November, focuses on applied settings and real-world concerns. This quarterly journal deals with explorations of problems and situations from a communicative orientation.
Text and Performance Quarterly, published in January, April, July and October, focuses on the history, theory, and criticism of any type of text realized in performance.
The Quarterly Journal of Speech, published in February, May, August and November, includes articles, research reports, and book reviews of interest to persons across a broad spectrum of the communication arts. QJS tends to be humanistic in its orientation.

Other Publications

Spectra, the association newsletter, is sent to members each month. Its contents include: announcements of meetings, conferences, new publications, award competitions; calls for papers for conventions and journals, news of association activities, letters to the editor, and editorials. Regular columns include: News and Notes, In Our Journals, Scholars and Scholarship, and monthly columns from the NCA President, Executive Director, and a column on educational resources. Spectra also carries in its classified advertising section the most complete "Positions Available" listings for professionals in communication education

Communication Teacher, a 16­page quarterly, includes practical teaching exercises and resources for college and high school communication instructors. Tested in the classroom, the exercises represent the dedication of "teachers who care about better speaking, listening, and relating, and share their ideas."

The Speech Communication Directory, published annually, lists NCA and regional association members alphabetically and geographically. The Directory contains additional information about NCA, departments and programs in communication in higher education, regional and state speech communication associations, and other communication related organizations and their publications.

The Free Speech Yearbook

The International and Intercultural Annual.

An Index to Journals in Communication Studies, covering the NCA journals and many others, is published at regular intervals. The Index provides unified cumulative subject and author indexes with tables of contents for each issue of each journal. This information is also available on CD-ROM under the title CommSearch.

CRTNET News is a daily electronic newsletter bringing position, grant, fellowship and conference announcements to your electronic mailbox, as well as discussion of topics of interest.

A Directory of Graduate Programs, a reference book for those interested in graduate programs offered in the speech communication field. This information is also available in a searchable format on this home page.
