Meeting Minutes

NCA Student Clubs (NCASC)

Annual Business Meeting

Friday, November 12, 3:30 – 4:45 pm

Meeting Chair: Liz Van Lysal, National Coordinator

Information: Van Lysal presented a report from the NCA National Office

Discussion: Student “meet and greet” at NCA National Convention

Action:  None

Discussion:  Morreale led a discussion on the formation of an NCASC Faculty Advisory Board to create a member-lead leadership structure.

Action:  Four Faculty Advisors volunteered to serve on the NCASC Faculty Advisory Board for two year terms, 2004-2006:

1.      Neil Patten, Ferris State University

2.      Shannon Brogan, Ohio University – Chillicothe

3.      Jennifer Willis-Rivera, University of Wisconsin – River Falls

4.      Steve Hunt, Illinois State University

Discussion:  Possibility of awards to encourage and reward students.  Two awards were considered:

bulletTop NCASC Member Paper Award – awarded to the best paper (individual or group-authored) written by a member of NCASC that has been accepted for presentation at the NCA National Convention.

Action:  A motion to create this award was made, seconded, and approved unanimously.

bulletClub of the Year – this award would be in the form of a traveling plaque engraved with the name of the winning club, as well as a mini-plaque that would be given to the winning club.  Criteria Discussion included: community service, promotion of communication, interaction with faculty, level of professionalism, and what stands out about the chapter.  A scoring matrix was discussed as the selection tool.

Action:  A motion to create this award was made, seconded, and approved unanimously.  The issue to develop award criteria was assigned to the Faculty Advisory Board.

Discussion:  Van Lysal asked what the National Office could do to help NCASC clubs and members.  Items that were suggested included the following: facilitate a speaker network – members of NCA who would be willing to speak to student clubs; scholarships; a newsletter; linking club websites to the NCA website; collective fundraising campaigns; and encouraging greater information exchange among clubs using the NCA sponsored email discussion list.

Action:  Van Lysal is going to work with advisors and members to best serve them and address some of the above suggestions.  For starters, a list of all current NCASC affiliates will be sent out to advisors in order to facilitate communication between clubs.  All faculty advisors will be encouraged to join the NCASC email list and all attendees to the business meeting will be invited to join as well.
