Oral Communication in K-12 Education: The Role of the National Communication Association

The purpose of NCA's K-12 projects is to support and promote a working relationship among communication teachers and administrators in grades K-16, and to provide essential pedagogical and curricular resources needed by these educators. The NCA is addressing a concern that communication teaching has not been sufficiently effective in grades K-12, by developing and providing the necessary expertise and products required by K-12 educators and administrators.

- K-12 Instruction Improvement: In collaboration with other associations, the Association is working to improve the quality of communication instruction in K-12 classrooms, regardless of the discipline of the teacher. Those efforts include activities such as teacher workshops and instructional methods.

- Standards Development: The NCA has developed standards for speaking, listening, and media literacy for students in K-12. For the 20 standards, the Association has established competency statements in the areas of knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, along with grade-level teaching activities aligned with the standards and competencies. In addition, an assessment guidelines program is being produced for use with the standards and competencies. The K-12 Standards and Competencies document is available on the NCA Web site under the Education and Administration Section.

- Teacher Education Certification: The Association is taking an active role in setting up guidelines for including communication in the certification of teacher education programs.
