Advancement of the Discipline

The responsibility to advance the communication discipline rests with both NCA, its individual members, and communication departments.

An effective department begins with a carefully articulated mission statement. Click the button to the left for criteria for developing a mission statement and some exemplars shared with NCA by member departments.

A defense of communication studies can be mounted using evidence from numerous studies, reports, and surveys that call attention to the importance of communication education. Click the button to the left for a copy of a January 2000 article published in the Journal of the Association for Communication  Administration that annotates 100 such published reports.

View a benchmark NCA project to advance the discipline and to provide rationale for defending communication programs and departments by clicking the button to the left.
