Graduate Open House/Job Fair/Department Parties Registration is Now Closed

Limited Job Fair Registration Available Onsite

It is that time again to encourage your faculty and students to attend the NCA 89th Annual Meeting in Miami Beach, FL, November 20-23, 2003.  The deadline for early registration is October 1.

The 2003 NCA Annual convention will provide many activities and opportunities for Departments to reach out to over 4,300 people who attend NCA’s convention yearly.

Pre-registration is required for all department activities listed below.  Deadline is October 18, 2003.

Graduate School Open House: This event has been of primary interest to schools with graduate programs, especially those offering a doctoral degree.  Other programs may participate, as they desire.  The Open House will be scheduled for Thursday afternoon over two time slots (2:00pm – 4:45pm); in the past, it was scheduled for only one time period.   We hope this additional time will allow more students to learn about your program.

Unlike previous years in which the participating departments set up their displays on a tabletop, we will this year set the room with booths similar to those used the publisher's area.  Participating departments can rent a booth on a first-come-first-served basis. There will be no fee for participation by NCA Departmental Members.  The fee for non-member department participation in the Graduate School Open House will be $25.

Job Fair:  On Friday of the convention, we will offer a Job Fair, which will replace NCA’s traditional Placement Center.  All departments with a position (or the prospect of a position) may reserve a booth at the Job Fair.  NCA will set up the area with exhibit booths and each participating department may display whatever materials they feel appropriate.  The Friday Job Fair hours are 9:00am until 5:00pm and the Job Fair will be open to all convention attendees.  Participating departments will therefore be able to visit with a large number of prospective applicants.  Applicants will likewise have access to an initial view of all listed positions.

On Saturday, the participating departments will be able to keep their booth for follow-up interviews at their discretion. The area will be closed to all but the participating departments and the candidates they have invited to return. The charge for participating in the Job Fair for NCA Departmental Members will be $75. The fee for non-member departments will be $100.  This fee will include both the Job Fair on Friday and Interviewing session on Saturday.

Department Parties/Receptions: NCA will offer a special space for those departments who wish to hold a party in a common area and thereby minimize costs and set-up.  Departments who want to continue their practice of holding separate events in suites or in public space are welcomed to do so.  On Saturday evening from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm, NCA will offer a set of Department Parties in a ballroom.  NCA will arrange for cash bars and finger food for all to share.  NCA will give each participating department its own space by separating the ballroom, using decorations appropriate to New Orleans. A basic fee of $400 for NCA Department Members and $500 for non-institutional  members will give departments such a space and access to the cash bars.  In addition, departments can purchase drink coupons to give to guests and can contract with the hotel for special food items at their booth.

Departmental Membership Form: If your department does not have a membership with NCA, please note that all of these new activities provide for discounts when you are an NCA department member.

We hope that these new opportunities offered only to Departments will increase your visibility and provide your department with the necessary exposure for a successful convention experience.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Donna Porter (dporter@natcom.org) or  (202) 464-4622 at the NCA national office.

Thank you and we’ll see you in Miami Beach!
