Convention Theme: Reaching Out/Reaching In

A Welcome from Isa N. Engleberg

First Vice President and

Primary Convention Planner

REACH OUT and IN to Miami Beach!  Ten years ago, the 1993 NCA convention made its debut visit to exotic Miami Beach.  The 2003 convention welcomes you back to the vibrant “American Riviera.”  Where else can you mix communication scholarship with the hip Art Deco architecture of South Beach and the MiMo (Miami Modern) designs of the Fontainebleau and Eden Roc hotels?  Where else can you stroll an ocean boardwalk on your way to more than 1,200 convention programs?  Where else can you experience a mosaic of cultural communities: Latino, African American, Asian, Native American, Gay, Jewish, Retired, and International in the land of “hanging chads?”  Where else can you be in striking distance of Caribbean cruises, the Everglades, the Keys, and Orlando as well as some of the country’s finest dining, shopping, and sports centers?

The 2003 NCA Convention Theme—Reaching Out/Reaching In—provides a host of opportunities to learn more about the diversity of scholarship in communication studies.  You can choose from among 1,200 convention programs representing more than 100 NCA units and affiliate organizations.

A special Reaching Out/Reaching In Mini-Plenary Series features some of our discipline’s leading scholars as well as invited guests from other disciplines and related professions.  Enjoy and benefit from discussions in a wide variety of scholarly pursuits: communication ethics, rhetoric, African American communication, the rhetoric of science, media and the future, supportive communication, public relations, group communication, instructional communication, performance studies, family communication, diversity and media management, listening, intercultural communication, the rhetoric of social change, and more

Make special plans to attend the 2003 Carroll C. Arnold Distinguished Lecture.  Twenty years ago, Dr. Kenneth E. Andersen’s presidential address at NCA “A Code of Ethics for Speech Communication” influenced the scholarship and teaching of communication ethics in thousands of classrooms.  This year, Dr. Andersen will deliver the Arnold Lecture and address communication ethics in a broader context.

In addition to more than 1,200 individual programs, NCA2003 highlights special activities and sessions such as the preconvention conferences, seminars, workshops, programs on the scholarship of teaching and learning, the annual Job Fair and graduate school open houses, the popular town hall debates and media forums, the poster sessions and G.I.F.T.S. programs, and the many unit and affiliate organization meetings.

NCA2003 also offers plenty of opportunities to socialize.  In addition to the convention-wide receptions and customary university parties, Allyn & Bacon will host their annual bash after the Arnold Lecture and our new journal publisher, Taylor & Francis, will help us launch and celebrate our new publishing partnership.

The 2003 NCA convention and Miami Beach are great places to spend quality time with your friends while reaching out and reaching in to the best scholarship and practices in communication studies.

Welcome to Miami Beach

Greetings:

As Mayor of Miami Beach, I extend my sincerest wish that your time here in Miami Beach will be memorable and filled with opportunities for professional growth and some well-deserved relaxation. We know that you will find our beautiful City a most attractive gathering place. Miami Beach is magnificent year round; its climate has attracted people from across the country and the world.

Your National Communication Association Convention is being held in Miami Beach, called The Beach by locals. Miami Beach offers sun-filled beautiful beaches and year-round tropical ambiance. Our Art Deco District is only one of the many cultural actives and amenities we extend to you. We offer world-celebrated cuisine, representing a variety of nationalities, international shopping and an unparalleled assortment of activities. We would like you to visit Lincoln Road in the heart of the city to experience a unique blend of cafés, galleries and arts organizations. And best of all, visit world famous South Beach, the internationally acclaimed beach area packed with sidewalk cafes, restaurants, artists, and models and nightclubs. All of this is located in the Art Deco Historic District, which contains the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world. Please also explore the rest of our City, the grand hotels of mid-Beach and the undiscovered charm of North Beach. We look forward to sharing this event with you. To our out-of-town visitors we extend a very special welcome.

Miami Beach is new and exciting! We hope you will enjoy yourselves and that you will return to your homes with pleasant recollections of our City.

Cordially,

David Dermer

Mayor

Important Convention Program Notes

In 2003, NCA shifted from a convention planning process that required all submissions to be developed and mailed to the national office in hardcopy form to an integrated online planning system. We contracted with All Academic, a convention planning software company, that allowed NCA members, designated planners, and the NCA Office to:

·         submit paper and program proposals to unit and affiliate organization planners,

·         review, rank, and accept paper and program proposals,

·         schedule and rearrange accepted programs in assigned meeting rooms, and

·         prepare program copy for printing and posting on the NCA Web site.

As is the case with any new and complex system, we encountered numerous problems.  Rather than reliving those challenges here, we want to note significant program copy shortcomings that could not be remedied in time to meet the convention deadline.

1.        Several paper and program titles as well as the names of some presenters and paper authors disappeared into cyberspace.  We contacted planners by email and phone but did not succeed in recapturing all of the missing copy.

2.        About 50% of the top paper, debut paper, and student paper designations could not be retrieved or entered into the convention program.  We hope that all unit and affiliate organization planners will notify the top paper presenters of this honor.

3.        A few program planners encountered unusual difficulties in preparing their programs for scheduling that resulted in erroneous or missing copy.

4.        Some presenters’ names and sessions in the printed program may not always appear the same (or at all) in the online program.  As we copyedited the printed program, we were not able to enter every change into the online version.

5.        Co-authors were not entered or retrievable on some programs.

6.        Some of the presenter-entered names and affiliations were incorrect or missing.  We attempted to correct these errors as best we could in the online and printed program.

Although the online planning process worked well for the majority of planners, we know that improvements must be made before we embark on the 2004 convention planning process.  The NCA office is working with Martha Watson, next year’s primary planner, and with All Academic to improve the system in the following ways: (1) provide clear and detailed online instructions and prompts, (2) improve program planning features, (3) create a better system for tracking program submissions, reviews, and scheduling, and (4) provide more and better-informed online assistance.

We sincerely regret the errors, frustrations, and work burden required to inaugurate the online convention planning system.  We thank you for your patience.  We also ask for your understanding when you see errors in this program.  If you have any questions, please come to the Registration area in the Fontainebleau Hotel where an NCA staff member will help you resolve the problem.
