Sustaining the link between communication and action requires innovative teaching assignments. While the public speaking classroom provides a useful audience for nurturing the development of speaking skills, student speakers need to encounter audiences of consequence. That is they need to encounter audiences that can do something of consequence in response to the speeches. All panel members assign speeches that take students out of the traditional classroom to encounter audiences of consequence. Each comes ready to describe his/her assignment and engage the audience in a discussion of the benefits and complications of engaging audiences of consequence.

African American communicology is one of the fastest growing areas of communication and cultural inquiry in the field. Its origins precede the inception of the discipline, but the area has become developed over several decades of consistent research employing a variety of paradigms. This discussion has a dual function. First, this table talk panel convenes several leading scholars in African American communicology to assess the conditions and future of African American communication inquiry. Second, all of the participants are authors of essays within a recently released special issue of the Howard Journal of Communications, which focuses on advancements in African American communication research.

DEVELOPMENT OF DIAGNOSTIC INSTRUMENT AND INTERVENTION STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE STUDENT WRITING

The Department of Communication Studies and Theatre and the Center for Academic Support at Missouri Western State College collaborated on a project to identify and implement interventions in the area of technical and compositional writing skills of MWSC students. Ninety-nine students in upper-division CS&T courses produce a writing sample during the first semester of the project. A matrix was created to identify writing problems. Intervention strategies were designed and implemented during the next six weeks of the semester. The writing samples were assessed, using the matrix, by one faculty member and by one outside evaluator. A high level of reliability between the evaluators on the total number of errors (r=.820) but a low level of agreement within categories indicated a need for refinement of the assessment process in order to develop a matrix usable across courses and instructors. The panel will report on the three semester progress of the development of the instrument and design of intervention strategies. The six instructors have been involved in development of the matrix and intervention strategies. Additionally, two outside evaluators will present their reactions to the assessment.

THE PLAY OF THE HEART: A WORKSHOP

Sponsor: Theatre Division

Chair: Diana J. Denton, University of Waterloo

Successful and effective performers are often recognized as having a natural spontaneity and imaginative flare. They seem to embody a quality of presence, a quality of heart. It is this personal immediacy which underlines all effective performance and requires us to be fully ourselves - integrated, enlightened and aware. In this workshop, we recover the potentials of a heartful presence in performative practice, teaching and research through exploring the resources of meditation, imagination and play.
