Jef Dolan, Marymount University

Joan Milnes, Endicott College

The rationale for offering internship programs varies widely from one institution to the next. For some, the intern program serves to provide the student an early work opportunity, independent of that person's academic preparation for the experience. Other programs select only students who qualify in terms of grade point average and academic preparation for the experience. By examining mission statements, course syllabi and philosophic assumptions of intern programs, the panel will seek to identify a set of underlying values, guidelines and standards which might influence the development of intern programs.

The goal of this discussion panel is to review communication practices that have been documented to enhance health, and explore lesser known and understood speech rituals, practices and codes that are thought to be healing. Panelists will discuss the ways that practices such as social support, prayer, meditation, and emotional disclosure relate to current conceptions of communication. Once the healing communicative practices have been identified, we will analyze the positive and negative health implications of these practices, determine how to approach the more esoteric practices in communication research, and finally, provide what advice we can give about implementing these practices.

This roundtable discussion will focus on the following themes and tensions emergent from the practice of action research as a methodology of engagement that invites those in the community organizations to be co-researchers, rather than "the researched" (1) How do co-researchers jointly construct a "situation or problem?" (2)How do co-researchers enact a third language that allows for constructive feedback and learning? (3) How do co-researchers develop a way of reflexively exploring communication process as part of a research program committed to transformation? Each panel member and the respondent will present a brief statement about their involvement with action research and offer ideas about how communication influences action research and how action research influences the field of communication. Panel members will include both " academic" action researchers and those in the community organizations. Cross-cultural issues of the meaning of engagement will also be explored. Discussion will be open to audience participants.

"The Great Yanomami Controversy: Chagon and Neel Under Attack." David B. Depew, University of Iowa

Some have contended that terms of the rhetorical tradition such as ethos yield little when applied to the discourses of modern science. This panel explores three significant episodes in which the ethos of scientists, and the taint on that ethos, has been central to the reception of their work and to the fate of major research programs.
