Dear Colleague,
Let me welcome you to the 2002 NCA Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana. NCA members have shared that New Orleans is a favorite location for our annual convention. Restaurant fare ranges from gourmet food to inexpensive Beignets. Bourbon Street features bars, pubs, and clubs. Shoppers are attracted to antique shops and locally owned boutiques. A gambling casino is within a short walk from the convention hotels. History buffs cite the variety of museums and plantation tours.
Communication in Action is the theme for the 2002 convention. Like the mighty Mississippi, the theme is broad and narrow, shallow and deep, always with a forward motion. On the one hand, action refers to metaphysical and physical change; on the other, action may signify simple alterations or movements. The National Communication Association meets the new century energized and poised for new opportunities. “The great aim of education,” wrote Herbert Spencer, “is not knowledge but action.” Reflection on recent NCA themes and events in the world created a readiness to act. Nearly 100 planners have thoughtfully prepared and selected programs that reflect the convention theme. You will experience the bounty of their work as you examine this convention program.
The NCA 2002 Convention provides an opportunity for us to engage in thoughtful, meaningful, and empathic action. The Carroll C. Arnold Lecture, “Communication in Action: Capital Punishment in America", presented by Dr. Dwight Conquergood of Northwestern University, reflects the conference theme. This lecture will be provocative in its call to action.
Convention-wide Keynote
Conversations on the Grand Challenges also urge us to consider our future
actions. The 2002 Convention will not have a keynote speech, but will feature
over a dozen keynote conversations.
The convention will pause at two different times during the regularly
scheduled meetings to accommodate these conversations. Each of the conversations will feature
a grand communication challenge facing society that is of interest to
researchers, educators, and professionals.
Service-learning
Experiences in the Community demonstrate our willingness to act. Community
engagement and service -learning are central to many NCA activities, but we
have never before demonstrated that dedication in the convention city at the
time of our annual meeting. 2002
will change that pattern. In an
unprecedented move, community partnerships will be demonstrated through actual
service-learning experiences in the New Orleans community. NCA members and their students who wish
to do so will participate in an off-site and ongoing community project.
New challenges call for new
actions. This year’s NCA convention
in New Orleans will provide an occasion for strengthening the organization,
advancing the discipline, and enhancing national impact. We will also enjoy fellowship as we
socialize with old friends and new acquaintances. Welcome to N’Awlins!
All members and guests are urged to register (or complete pre-registration) as soon after arriving as possible. The NCA registration area, located on the 2nd floor of the New Orleans Marriott will be open as follows:

Registration for short courses may be completed on site at a registration counter, beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20. Persons enrolling for short courses that begin Thursday morning are strongly urged to register or complete pre-registration Wednesday evening. Thereafter, short course enrollment may be carried out during the regular registration hours listed above. Early registration is encouraged as short courses often fill during the pre-registration period. Choose carefully. Short Course fees are not refundable unless the course is canceled.
Do you want to know about local restaurants, sightseeing, and other things to do and places to see? If you need information about the hotel, the convention program, or the location of a room, visit the NCA Hospitality and Information Desk. Volunteers from the Hospitality and Information Committee are familiar with New Orleans and can answer questions about the city. Brochures and maps will be available.
