Frequently Asked Questions
Judy
C. Pearson, National Communication Association Convention November 21-24, 2002 New Orleans, Louisiana
Dear First-Time Attendee: Welcome to the 88th Annual Meeting of the National Communication Association (NCA), November 21-24, 2002. As the First Vice President of NCA and this year’s overall program planner, I have the pleasure of serving as one of the first people at NCA to greet you. I am pleased to meet you and assist you at your first NCA convention. To better understand membership needs, the doctoral students at North Dakota State University conducted membership surveys (see Spectra, May, 2002). They learned that many people—especially those new to the convention—have many unanswered questions about the convention. These questions cover a wide variety of topics. This Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Booklet provides answers to many of those questions for you. Since this is the first time that such a guide has been written, I welcome your responses. What has been missed? How can the booklet be more helpful? Please e-mail me at Judy.Pearson@ndsu.nodak.edu if you have suggestions. The goal is to serve first time convention attendees, but the hope is that all of our members may find some information of interest. The first assistance you may need is to learn about the convention hotels. NCA is convened in the New Orleans Marriott and the Sheraton New Orleans, directly across the street from each other, on Canal Street. Neither hotel has precedence. While registration and the exhibits will be housed in the Marriott, a larger number of programs will be scheduled in the Sheraton. The credit for much of the work in this handbook goes to Stephanie Ahlfeldt, Scott Barrett, Amanda Brown, Katie Hasbargen, Dan McRoberts, Anthony Ocana, and Cloy Tobola. These doctoral students identified questions and answers that they believed were pertinent—particularly for people who are new members or newcomers to the convention. They personalize their presence below. I acknowledge and appreciate their dedicated service to NCA. You are welcomed to the National Communication Association (NCA) convention. You will find intellectual and social opportunities that will nurture and sustain you. I look forward to serving you. Together, we will embark on a great adventure. Judy C. Pearson First Vice President National Communication Association
Welcome to the NCA convention! My name is Stephanie
Ahlfeldt, and I hope the information I provided on convention dress/attire,
ettiquette, networking, parties and getting involved is valuable and helpful.
I encourage you to look me up in the convention program, come see me at a panel,
and visit with me about any additional questions you may have. We'll see you in
New Orleans! Stephanie.Ahlfeldt@ndsu.nodak.edu Greetings from Dan
McRoberts and the NCA to the national convention. The goal of these materials, like the NCA, is to provide a "beginning" to the educational richness and diverse family you are now a part of. Have a great endeavor.
While a newcomer to NCA myself, my duties as Director of Planned Giving for NDSU have made me an experienced traveler. My contribution to this booklet includes some of the travel considerations: how to get back and forth to the airport, how to get medical and dental help, where the nearest convenience stores and pharmacy are located and whare are some good places to eat. Look me up at the Convention. My name is Tony Ocana. I am a Presidential Fellow in the NDSU Department of Communication's doctoral program, focusing my studies on communication and conflict. I hope you will find my contributions in this booklet on safety, poster design, planning your conference time, and finding your trip helpful. I look forward to meeting all of you in New Orleans!
My name is Katie Hasbargen and I, too, am a graduate student and a newcomer to NCA. New Orleans is a great city to visit and putting together the information for this booklet regarding popular, entertainment related venues was fun. Best wishes for a terrific conference!
