2014 Call for Committee Members


NCA seeks members to serve on a variety of important governance and award selection committees. Nominations for each position are solicited and reviewed by the NCA Committee on Committees. Appointments will be made at the Legislative Assembly meeting at our annual convention. Nominations from traditionally under-represented groups are especially encouraged. 

Nomination Materials 

A completed nomination must include:

  • A 1-2 page cover letter summarizing interest and qualifications for position. In this letter nominees must include a statement that if appointed, the nominee agrees to serve.
  • An abbreviated curriculum vitae of no more than five pages highlighting professional qualifications, especially those that apply to the position for which one is applying.

Committee on International Discussion and Debate (CIDD)  

One Position for a member representing the western region to serve a four year term starting in January 2015 

The Committee on International Discussion and Debate promotes international understanding and the practice of communication through discussion and debates between students from the United States and other nations.

The program seeks to Broaden the scope of international educational and cultural exchanges by providing a channel for the exchange of ideas and attitudes among students and young people in America and throughout the world; Make possible informal meetings among students, college and university personnel, and the general citizenry of participating countries; Facilitate the exchange of information and ideas about the educational systems of the countries involved; Reinforce the importance of dialogue as a preferred means for resolving international and intercultural differences; Maintain and enhance the ties between the National Communication Association and forensics organizations, forensics programs, and their sponsoring academic departments throughout the United States; and Provide opportunities to enhance an understanding and appreciation of the discipline of communication both in other nations and in the United States.

Four members represent the four regions of the nation (East, West, South and Central). Each member serves a four year term.

 

Doctoral Education Committee  

Four Positions to serve a three year term beginning in January 2015.  

The purpose of the Doctoral Education Committee is to promote the highest standards of communication scholarship through excellence in doctoral education. The Committee works in communication and collaboration with the Research Board and other Association bodies as appropriate to its activities.

Members are selected with the intent of maintaining a committee that is representative of doctoral programs geographically, intellectually, and in other appropriate ways. Individuals at the mid-career stage or beyond are usually recommended to the Legislative Assembly. Members serve a three-year term.

 

Leathers Fund Trustee Committee  

One Position to serve a three year starting in January 2015 

The Trustees of the Fund are charged with devising general criteria for judging proposals, for selecting the designees of the fund, and for establishing any priorities for operationalizing the purposes of the Fund, intended to support communication scholarship in Eastern Europe.

Individuals at the mid-career stage or beyond and with an interest in promoting communication teaching and research in Eastern Europe are usually recommended to the Legislative Assembly.

 

Legislative Assembly  

Two Positions to serve a three year term starting in January 2015 

The Legislative Assembly is the principal policy making body of NCA and is responsible for managing its resources and affairs.

Each year the Committee on Committees is asked to nominate two people for three-year terms on the NCA Legislative Assembly who will represent emerging interests and critical problems and help the Assembly achieve a balanced representation of teaching levels, ethnic and minority group interests, gender, age, and academic status. NCA members at any stage of their professional lives will be considered for this appointment.

 

Nominating Committee  

One Chair position to serve a one year term starting in September 2015  

One At-Large Member position elected by the Legislative Assembly to serve a one year term starting in September 2015 

Eight At-Large Members selected by the Committee on Committees to be placed on the association-wide general election ballot in the January 2015.  

The Nominating Committee is responsible for preparing a slate for the election of the Second Vice President, the at-large members of the Legislative Assembly, and the at-large members of the Committee on Committees.

One person will be nominated by the Committee on Committees to serve as Chair of the Nominating Committee for a one-year term. Individuals at mid-career and beyond are generally submitted to the Legislative Assembly, but interested and committed members from any rank will be considered.

One at-large member will be nominated by the Committee on Committees and approved by the Legislative Assembly for a one-year term.

Eight at-large members will be nominated by the Committee on Committees to be put on the general membership election slate and four will be elected in the NCA Election.

 

Resolutions Committee  

Three Positions to serve a two-year term starting in January 2015 

Following a call for resolutions, the Resolutions Committee receives, reviews, and edits motions to be brought before the Legislative Assembly. The committee may also originate motions. The Committee on Committees will nominate three persons currently serving on the Legislative Assembly to serve for a two-year term.

Individuals at mid-career and beyond are generally submitted to the Legislative Assembly, but interested and committed members from any rank will be considered. Nominees must be current members of the LA.

 

Board Positions 

Special procedures for nominations to the Finance, Educational Policies, Publications and Research Boards: According to NCA Bylaws, nominees for board positions are first recommended by the respective board before being considered by the Committee on Committees and approved by the Legislative Assembly. Members interested in a board position should contact the respective board director as well as submit nomination materials to nomination@natcom.org.

 

Educational Policies Board   

Two Positions for members from a community college or other faculty to serve a three year term starting in January 2015.  

The Educational Policies Board encourages, endorses, or engages in projects related to the improvement of instruction in communication at all levels. It also coordinates other NCA educational and instructional development activities.

This year, the Board seeks applicants from a community college and other faculty who have demonstrated commitment to pedagogy, communication education, service to the discipline, and innovative thinking are usually recommended to the Committee on Committees and Legislative Assembly.

Finance Board   

One Position to serve a three year term (2 years as a member; 1 year as director) starting in January 2015.  

The Finance Board consists of three people and advises the Legislative Assembly and Executive Committee on financial matters by proposing and monitoring budgets and assessing financial implications of proposals and ongoing programs.

One member will be appointed to a three-year term and serve as board chair and voting member of the Executive Committees during the third year of service on the board. All Finance Board members are members of the Executive Committee and Legislative Assembly. Because of the responsibilities of this Board, individuals at more senior stages of their professional lives and who have had financial experience as a department chair or senior administrator are usually recommended to the Committee on Committees and Legislative Assembly.

Publications Board  

Two Positions as members of the board for a three year term starting in January 2015.  

One Director-Elect for a three year term starting in January 2015.   

The Publications Board monitors association publication policies, nominates journal and other publication editors and oversees all association publications.

Nominees who are at mid-career or beyond with a strong publication record and editorial board experience are usually recommended to the Committee on Committees and Legislative Assembly.

The director-elect will shadow the current director for one year beginning in January 2015 and will begin the 3 year term as director in January 2016. The director-elect will work with the current director, who is responsible for directing and coordinating the work of the board and representing the board on the NCA Executive Committee. Some administrative experience and past service on the board is preferred, but not required.

Research Board  

Two Positions for members focused in qualitative research for a three year term starting in January 2015.  

The Research Board promotes and facilitates research. The board’s mission involves all types of communication inquiry and institutional levels. The board undertakes outreach to funding agencies and professional associations and develops and enacts initiatives to promote research within our discipline.

Individuals who are at mid-career or beyond and who have established a strong research record with some record of seeking external funding are usually recommended to the Committee on Committees and Legislative Assembly.

Bernard J. Brommel Award for Outstanding Scholarship or Distinguished Service in Family Communication Selection Committee  

One Position to serve a three year term starting in January 2015 

The Brommel Award recognizes outstanding scholarship or distinguished service in family communication. One member will be appointed for a three-year term and will serve as committee chair during the third year. Individuals at the mid-career stage or beyond and focused on teaching/researching in family communication are usually recommended to the Legislative Assembly.

 

Diamond Anniversary Book Award Selection Committee  

One Position to serve a three year term starting in January 2015 

The selection committee is charged with soliciting and assessing the most outstanding scholarly book published during the previous two years. One member will be appointed for a three-year term and will serve as committee chair during the third year. Individuals at the mid-career stage or beyond are usually recommended to the Legislative Assembly.

 

Donald P. Cushman Memorial Award Selection Committee  

Two Positions to serve a three year term starting in January 2015 

The Donald P. Cushman Memorial Award was created to honor Dr. Cushman, an influential figure across the field of communication. The award is designed to recognize Cushman’s mentorship of students, which centered around excellence in scholarship, as well as their socialization as scholars in the communication discipline. The award honors the top-ranked student authored paper from all NCA Interest Groups that competitively rank papers for programming at the NCA Annual Convention.

Members will be appointed to serve a three-year term. Members must hold a doctoral degree, have faculty status, and be able to demonstrate relevant experience in evaluating advanced student scholarship.

 

Douglas W. Ehninger Distinguished Rhetorical Scholar Award Selection Committee  

One Position to serve a three year term starting in January 2015 

The award honors scholars who have executed research programs in rhetorical theory, rhetorical criticism, and/or public address studies. One committee member will be appointed for a three-year term and will serve as committee chair during the third year. Individuals at the mid-career stage or beyond and with a research program in rhetorical theory, rhetorical criticism and/or public address studies are usually recommended to the Legislative Assembly.

 

Franklyn S. Haiman Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Freedom of Expression Selection Committee  

One Position to serve a three year term starting in January 2015 

The selection committee will review nominations of outstanding published research on freedom of expression. One member will be appointed for a three-year term and will serve as committee chair during the third year. Individuals at the mid-career stage or beyond and engaged in teaching/research on Freedom of Expression are usually recommended to the Legislative Assembly.

 

Gerald M. Phillips Award for Distinguished Applied Communication Scholarship Selection Committee  

One Position to serve a three year term starting in January 2015 

The Phillips Award for Distinguished Applied Communication Scholarship is to be given to the author of a body of published research and creative scholarship in applied communication. One member will be appointed for a three-year term and will serve as committee chair during the third year. Individuals at the mid-career stage or beyond and who are engaged in teaching/research in applied communication are usually recommended to the Legislative Assembly.

 

Golden Anniversary Monograph Award Selection Committee  

Three Positions serve a two year term starting in January 2015 

The Golden Anniversary Monograph Awards Committee is charged with soliciting and evaluating the most outstanding scholarly monograph published during the previous calendar year. Three members will be appointed for a two-year term. The Committee on Committees recommends to the Legislative Assembly a chair from the three serving in their second year. Individuals at the mid-career stage or beyond are usually recommended to the Legislative Assembly.

 

Karl R. Wallace Memorial Award Selection Committee  

One Position to serve a three year term starting in January 2015 

The award is given to foster and promote philosophical, historical, or critical scholarship in rhetoric and public discourse. One member will be appointed for a three-year term and will serve as committee chair during the third year. Individuals at the mid-career stage or beyond are usually recommended to the Legislative Assembly.

 

Leslie Irene Coger Award for Distinguished Performance Selection Committee  

One Position to serve a three year term starting in January 2015 

The award recognizes a career dedicated to performance. One member will be appointed for a three-year term and will serve as committee chair during the third year. Individuals with experience in performance usually are recommended to the Legislative Assembly.

 

Lilla A. Heston Award for Outstanding Scholarship in Interpretation and Performance Studies Selection Committee  

One Position to serve a three year term starting in January 2015 

The award committee selects recipients of the award for outstanding scholarship in interpretation and performance studies. One member will be appointed for a three-year term and will serve as committee chair during the third year. Individuals at the mid-career stage or beyond and engaged in interpretation and performance studies are usually recommended to the Legislative Assembly.

  

Marcella E. Oberle Award for Outstanding Teaching in Grades K-12 Selection Committee  

One Position to serve a three year term starting in January 2015 

The Oberle Award is given to teachers at the kindergarten through senior high school level who have exhibited both outstanding teaching and a commitment to the speech communication profession and to teaching.

This year, the Committee on Committees a high school teacher with a minimum of 5 years teaching experience to serve a 3 year term and will chair the committee in the last two years of the term.

 

Mark L. Knapp Award in Interpersonal Communication Selection Committee  

Two Positions to serve a two year term starting in January 2015 

The Mark L. Knapp Award in Interpersonal Communication recognizes career contributions to the study of interpersonal communication.  The award recognizes individuals who have made significant scholarly contributions to the study of interaction and/or relational processes. 

Members will be chosen by the Past Chair of the Interpersonal Communication Division, in consultation with the NCA Committee on Committees; they will be recognized leaders in the study of interpersonal communication, who are well acquainted with the broad scope of scholarship in the area. The Committee on Committees, with advice of the chair from the previous year, nominates a person serving in his or her second year to serve as chairperson.

  

Michael and Suzanne Osborn Community College Outstanding Educator Award Selection Committee  

One Position to serve a two year term starting in January 2015 

The award recognizes an outstanding community college educator within NCA. One member will be appointed for a three-year term and will serve as committee chair during the third year. Individuals at any stage of their professional lives may be recommended to the Legislative Assembly, although preference is given to those with experience in teaching at community colleges.

 

Professional Service Awards Selection Committee  

Three Positions to serve a one year term starting in January 2015 

The Professional Service Awards Committee selects the recipients of the Samuel L. Becker Distinguished Service Award and the Robert J. Kibler Memorial Award. Both awards honors members who have demonstrated excellence, commitment and service to the association and the discipline.

Three members are appointed for a one-year term. The committee chair will be nominated by the Committee on Committees from among the three selected. Individuals at senior stages in their professional lives with long service to NCA are usually recommended to the Legislative Assembly. Members of the selection committee are often, but not always, former officers of the Association and/or recipients of the award.

 

Stephen E. Lucas Debut Publication Award Selection Committee 
One Position to serve a three year term starting in January 2015 

The Lucas Debut Publication Award seeks to encourage and reward new scholars in the communication discipline publishing their first scholarly book or monograph. One member will be appointed for a three-year term and will serve as committee chair during the third year. Individuals at the mid-career stage or beyond representing diversity of scholarly methods and substantive interest are usually recommended to the Legislative Assembly.
